Hudson will donate 10 cents for every Facebook user that clicks the “Like” button on its forthcoming game Lost In Shadow.

Child’s Play is a pet charity of the videogame set. The organization, founded by Penny Arcade cartoonists Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, raises cash for children’s hospitals, providing toys, games, books and movies to sick kids. It’s not uncommon for game companies to tie Child’s Play fundraisers to promotions for their new games.

Here, Hudson is piggybacking its good deed ..read the full article

Metroid: Other M is the exact kind of game Nintendo said it wasn’t making anymore.

Sometime during the last generation of game consoles, everybody decided that action games had to be big cinematic to-dos stuffed with lengthy movie sequences, Hollywood actors and epic storylines. Everybody except Nintendo, that is, who said “No thanks, we’ll just make Wii Sports forever” and made sure that its flagship ..read the full article

Star Wars Uncut, a crowdsourced remake of the original 1977 film, was released on Friday. Those with keen eyes will notice that more than a couple of the scenes use videogame controllers as sci-fi props.

The project, conceived by Casey Pugh, tasked hundred of civilians with reshooting 15-second segments of George Lucas’ classic space opera. Users voted on the best scenes, then Pugh and company strung ..read the full article

In the next few months, Sony and Microsoft will introduce motion controls and exercise-based games to their game machines, to keep up with Nintendo’s Wii. In this guest column, child psychiatrist Paul Ballas argues for a new rating system that evaluates a videogame’s capacity to work you out.

The Wii console has now sold over 30 million units in the U.S. alone since its launch in November 2006, Nintendo said on Tuesday.

Besides pointing out this milestone, Nintendo released lists of the best-selling U.S. Wii games produced by Nintendo and other software makers, which are listed below. Besides Wii Sports, which was and continues to be packed in with the console, the biggest-selling game is Wii Play (pictured above).

Yes, yes, I know it’s damning with faint praise to say that something looks good for a Wii game, but damn if The Last Story doesn’t look good for a Wii game.

Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi’s new game for Nintendo cribs its graphical style right from FF XII, doesn’t it? The action sequences definitely look interesting, though, especially the idea of adding a little bit of shooting behind cover.

I passed on Xenoblade for now, but I think I’m going to ..read the full article

I was annoyed with Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, until I turned it down to Easy mode.

Nintendo’s latest Wii game, released Sunday, is a follow-up to a little-known shooter that became a cult hit. The original Sin & Punishment for Nintendo 64 was developed by Treasure, developer of stylish and brutally hard action games like Gunstar Heroes and Mischief Makers. Released exclusively in Japan in 2000, it became a sought-after import for its gorgeous graphics and “bullet hell” shooting action. ..read the full article

Nintendo on Tuesday previewed a new Legend of Zelda game for the Wii console.

Dubbed The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, the game utilizes the Wiimote and Nunchuk accessories to simulate body movements of Link in a 3-D environment.

Using the Wiimote, players will be able to swing Link’s sword at different angle and throw or bowl bombs, among other actions. The Nunchuk is used to control Link’s running as well as holding up his shield to parry against attacks. Players can ..read the full article

Sonic wasn’t always the beaten-up shell of a hedgehog he is today. When Sega launched the first Sonic the Hedgehog game on its 16-bit Genesis console in 1991, the action game was a huge hit. Sega positioned Sonic as its answer to Nintendo’s Mario series, backed with a massive marketing blitz.

Sonic was the new hotness: He ran across the game screen with blazing speed and had a too-cool-for-school attitude that any mascot needed in the early ’90s. Kids and core ..read the full article

Videogames can help you slim down. A study conducted by the Dr. John Porcari from the University of Wisconsin found that the games EA Sports Active and EA Sports Active More Workouts for the Wii fit the guidelines for effective exercise regimens as laid out by the American College of Sports Medicine.

“In terms of the intensity criteria,” Porcari said in a press release Thursday, “both workouts tested from EA Sports Active were sufficiently intense to be within ACSM guidelines.” Porcari’s ..read the full article

Most videogames these days pack some sort of post-ending content, whether that be additional levels, tougher difficulty settings or collectible objects you didn’t pick up the first time through.

The more punctilious game reviews give these bonus options a grade under the heading “replay value.” The extras are usually extraneous, though — little rewards for truly devoted fans who want to keep playing in the game’s world. Everybody knows the good stuff is all before the ending.

Even if you’ve played every bit of Super Mario Galaxy, you’ll find its sequel packed full of surprises.

It’s rare for Nintendo to create a straightforward follow-up like this. In fact, the Sunday release of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the first time in over 20 years that the company has launched two traditional Mario games on the same home console. Producer Shigeru Miyamoto said he greenlit the project because the team “hadn’t run out of ideas.”

And boy, was he not ..read the full article

Ever wonder just how Nintendo created the company culture that produced the Wii and DS?

Well, tough cookies. As the author of a new book called Nintendo Magic states repeatedly, Nintendo doesn’t like to talk about its management philosophy. But Nikkei Business writer Osamu Inoue has enjoyed some enviable access — exclusive interviews with company president Satoru Iwata, chief creative Shigeru Miyamoto and best of all reclusive former Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi, who speaks to the press approximately once a century.

With its release of a black Wii this week, Nintendo has tempted current owners of its videogame machine to trade their white consoles in for the slick new paint job.

There’s just one problem: Nintendo does not offer gamers a way to transfer games purchased online from one console to another. Neither the Wii nor Nintendo’s portable DSi consoles have an upgrade path for downloadable content, since games are tied not to user accounts but to specific machines. It’s impossible for ..read the full article

Michael Pachter, analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities, predicts that Nintendo will cut prices of the Wii and Nintendo DS hardware in 2010.

Pachter expects that the inclusion of Wii Sports Resort and the MotionPlus accessory with Wii hardware will increase demand this summer. “However, we believe Nintendo will have to cut price later this year in order to keep demand steady,” he wrote to investors on Thursday. “Should the Wii price point remain at ($200)… we expect the company to have ..read the full article

Nintendo of America will bundle its Wii Sports Resort game and the Wii MotionPlus controller with all new Wii consoles starting this month, the gamemaker said Monday.

The console will continue to be priced at $200, but will now include the accessory and Resort, which requires the MotionPlus. All Wii consoles will still be bundled with the original Wii Sports game.

When the bundle launches on May 9, Nintendo will also introduce a black-colored Wii console (pictured) in the U.S.
