2K Play’s Axel & Pixel is a stylish take on the point-and-click adventure for Xbox Live Arcade, and we’ve got three download tokens to give away.

The game chronicles the adventures of a painter and his dog, cartoon characters set adrift in a bizarre dream world made of colorized stock photographs and clip art. The effect is like the cast of Dr. Katz on the set of Monty Python. Getting them through each level requires clicking on interesting things to and ..read the full article

Any San Diego Comic-Con old-timer will tell you that the convention isn’t quite what it used to be. Hollywood and videogame companies have taken over, pushing artists who work in old-fashioned ink to the peripheries.

Could the same thing be happening to Alternative Press Expo, the ancestral home of indie comics and zines? Boing Boing’s Brandon Boyer noted in a recent post that videogames are beginning to creep into the expo, held October 17-18 in San Francisco.

Spelunky designer Derek Yu was ..read the full article

The first batch of downloadable DJ Hero songs mashes 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige and Queen all together — but costs $6.

Scrolling text at the bottom of the menu screen will remind you, fairly subtly, that there is new music available. But DJ Hero doesn’t have an in-game store like Rock Band, so I had to back out to the Xbox 360 dashboard to download the new tracks.

The first package is called “Extended Mix Pack 01″ and will set you ..read the full article

Dementium II

First-person survival horror lives on the Nintendo DS in Dementium II, coming this February.

Currently in development at Austin game studio Renegade Kid, the game picks up right where 2007’s Dementium: The Ward left off, with more scary story, gory visuals and graphical wizardry that pushes the limits of the DS.

In Dementium II, players find themselves waking up, once again, not knowing where they are or how they got there. It turns out the protagonist has had brain surgery, and is ..read the full article

demonssouls

Demon’s Souls, the novel, must-play RPG exclusive to the PlayStation 3 is difficult enough as it is. On Halloween, it’s going to get a hell of a lot harder.

In an emailed statement, an Atlus spokesperson said that the company will be tweaking the game’s “world tendency” system away from the light to celebrate All Hallow’s Eve.

“We’ve discovered that the nefarious Demon will seek to descend the land in pure blackness,” read the statement. “His minions will be more powerful, ..read the full article

Seasteading didn’t quite work out for libertarian ideologue Andrew Ryan in BioShock, the creepy game released in 2007 to widespread acclaim. Ryan’s underwater utopia collapsed, thanks in part to genetic enhancements that gave superhuman powers to the denizens of Rapture, turning it into a saltwater kill zone.

In BioShock 2, one of the most anticipated game sequels ever, you awake eight years after the where the original left off. You’re missing all your memories but you know what you are: a ..read the full article

dragonage1

With sprawling, lore-heavy role-playing videogames like Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, developer Bioware has made a name for itself as a story-teller. In Dragon Age: Origins, due Nov. 3 for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the gamemaker proves it doesn’t take a tome full of back story to hook players into a plot.

The game kicks off with one of six opening acts, depending on the background chosen by a player for his or her ..read the full article

Edgar Wright’s big-screen adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim comic books isn’t even done yet (and not due out until next year), but Juno director Jason Reitman thinks you should be excited about it — especially if you play videogames.

In a series of tweets after viewing an early cut of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Reitman calls the film, “the first all-encompassing film of the joystick generation.”

For the uninitiated, Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim comic books trade heavily in the ..read the full article

It’s one thing to shout “Don’t open that door!” to the clueless protagonist of a slasher film, but what do you do when you’re controlling that endangered character and you’ve got to twist that doorknob? From zombies to ghosts to the just plain criminally insane, the horror videogames in this year’s hellish crop unleash a wide variety of things that go bump (and stab) in the night.

Just in time for Halloween, Wired.com has rounded ..read the full article
